JBL M-Patch Active-1 Mono switch - Image

Mono switch

Activate this switch to listen to the audio outputs in monophonic mode. This combines the stereo audio signal into a monophonic signal, which is useful when checking for any phase cancellation issues in the stereo signal.

Volume control

As it is an ACTIVE device, the ACTIVE-1’s Volume control, controls an electronic circuit, which in turn adjusts the level of the audio going through the device, providing gain increase as well as attenuation.

Item# ACTIVE-1

Precision control

The M-PATCH ACTIVE-1 accommodates four input sources (3 x stereo analog and 1 x USB) and three stereo analog outputs plus USB. In addition to the core functionality of providing seamless A/B switching between input signals and output speaker monitor systems, the ACTIVE-1 delivers a full complement of audio monitoring functions, including precision volume control, mono summing, mute, and dim (ducking). A handy footswitch-activated talk-back function, complete with on-board condenser microphone and selectable routing, has also been integrated, making the ACTIVE-1 the ideal low-cost solution for a broad range of studio production applications. Designed to provide the lowest-noise operation possible in an active monitor controller, the ACTIVE-1 is ideal for applications where both signal attenuation and boost is needed. In addition to the feature complement found on the PASSIVE-1, the ACTIVE-1 also includes LED level metering and convenient switch-selectable +4dBu/-10dBV input stage operation. The ACTIVE-1 features on-board USB, allowing for direct digital audio recording and playback when used with a computer DAW. The USB output mirrors the signals appearing at the analog 2 Track outputs, while the computer’s L/R output feeds the USB in. Housed in a sturdy metal chassis and fitted with a durable array of switches and secure connectors, the ACTIVE-1 is built to provide years of worry-free operation.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Does what needs to be done This device functions much like a HiFi preamplifier, taking multiple inputs and directing the signal to multiple outlets with a simple volume control. I found the USB interface to work smoothly with a Windows 10 based PC system. The dual outputs make adding a powered subwoofer easy. The device is relatively quiet, interfaces easily with consumer and professional equipment and is simple to set up. I use it to control a pair of JBL 306 powered monitors which are fine but a little noisy. The device runs hot and I've only had it in service for about a month so I can't comment on its durability.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Works great before they die I bought the first one, which worked great. It was exactly what I wanted and needed. Clean sounding, low noise. The problem is that it died after 4 months. I thought, it was just a fluke and bought another one. Same thing. The second new one lasted for about 6 months. Now I have two dead matching paperweights. I thought it might have been a bad AC adapter, but when I got the new second one, I tried the new AC adaptor with my older dead unit, it still would not power up. I own many JBL products and have spent thousands of dollars on them. For the most part, have been happy with the quality. However, I would advise that you only buy these if you want a disposable unit. I'm thinking that Harman may have an inherent problem with any product that interfaces with a computer, as I have a Crown amp that when I did the Firmware update, it died as well. Now, I also have a very expensive heavy doorstop!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from USB disconnects for no reason. Unable to keep USB connection with Mac computer. Basically unusable if you want to connect it digitally. I bought this unit after reading too many bad reviews but I simply could not believe JBL would release a flawed product without at least improving the following batches. I was wrong. It turns out the reviews were right.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Great monitor select. Terrible switches! I loved this unit which makes my experience such a disappointment. As a new unit, It had a clean sound and performed exactly what I needed in my clean smokeless recording environment and it sit only on my recording desk But Monitor Select 1 was unable to latch in selected state in less than a year and both switches began sounding dirty soon thereafter. At two years old, Input selector switches began to fail which eventually caused me to remove it from the signal chain. By habit, I always lower the volume to 0 before doing any switching. Now the ACTIVE-1 would intermittently output damage level static pops to my monitors without touching it. Multiple same component failure in this one complex device sure points to a quality issue. If I could procure quality replacement switches, an evening project would probably allow me to place this device back into service. Please contact me with specs on the switches and procurement. This experience has blemished my 50 year dedication to JBL products.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Has worked fine for me -- no complaints. I haven't had a need to use the USB input or output, but the analog inputs and outputs work well. I use the box the drive a couple JBL powered monitors and subwoofer. It has provided very useful functionality and has held up well over the couple years I've used it in my studio.

Product Q&A

What, if anything, can be done about the squealing midi connection? I have read this in other reviews and mine does the same thing. For $200 this product should work as advertised. It does not in it's current form. Would appreciate a cure for this.

Asked by: smlaws
Using balanced cables fixed the midi noise problem. The manual says balanced and unbalanced. My bad. Moderator,  please take down the original review if possible. Sorry for the misleading review due to my ignorance. Product works as advertised.
