Would these speakers work for rear surround speakers in a 5.1 system?
Yes, these speakers would work well as rear surround speakers assuming that your amplifier/receiver can handle it, since the impedance of this speaker is 8 ohms and the recommended amplifier power is 80W.

If I use the 55IW for the center speaker it will need to be mounted vertically, i.e., with one woofer above the other. How will this affect sound? Would it be better to use the 6IW for center instead? (L and R speakers will be 6IW.)
The JBL Arena 55IW speaker, when being used as a center channel, must be mounted horizontally. If you must do a vertical mount, you are better off using a single JBL Arena 6IW speaker.

You can use any amplifier for our JBL Arena 6IW that has 8 ohms and is able to provide the amplified power of 80 watts.
