A subwoofer that puts you in the driver’s seat

JBL believes sound quality should never be compromised. And Series III subwoofers make sure you don’t have to compromise flexibility, either. That’s because the high-performance, step-up subwoofers feature SSI™ (Selectable Smart Impedance), an exclusive impedance switch that lets you select the optimum impedance—2 or 4 ohms—for your system. Special aero-cooling design in the voice coil boosts power handling as well as reliability. And an oversized voice coil handles more power than common two-inch voice coils. More power, more reliability, more flexibility—and no compromising. When you’re ready to step up, Series III is your subwoofer.

Hi, i just purchased one S3-1224 from JBL Italy and im building the Closed Box suggested in the manual (21.2 Litres). What is the reccomended low cut please?Thankyou in advance. P.S. Ive been customer for 30 years love JBL :)

Asked by: Franco
The recommended frequency response for your JBL S3-1224 is 25Hz-175Hz, You could set your hi-pass to 25Hz which will be fine though setting it to 30Hz would be much more conservative.

Would the club 5501 be a suitable amp to power this sub ?

Asked by: Izywizy
Hi Izywizy, Yes, you'll be easily able to drive this subwoofer with the Club 5501 amplifier. Just a little extra information: The S3-1224 has no enclosure, so you will have to buy/build this yourself. The Thiele-Small parameters ( technical information on size/dimensions/volume of the enclosure ) can be downloaded from our product page. If you require further information, please contact us on customer.support@harman.com

What is the displacement for the S3-1224? Also, can you recommend an enclosure design tool, as I am going to fit one these "vented" under the rear seat of a 99 Silverado Ext. cab 3 door. (I hope!)

Asked by: Sirinstalalot
The displacement for the S3-1224 is .12 cubic feet. Unfortunately, we don't have our own box design programs/tools but there are definitely 3rd party programs/tools that are widely available which should work nicely. If in any case you need the soft copy of the T/S parameter for the S3-1224, please submit a case at www.jbl.com/support-contact.html and our Customer Service Team will be glad to assist you.

I bought two subwoofer JBL S3-1224 I will install amplifier of 1500wrms in 2ohms to play sera that will not get too strong for both subwoofer?

Asked by: Jeferson
The S3-1224 handles up to 500W at 2/4 ohms. Both speakers connected to the amp will show the amp a 2 ohm load. At 2 ohms, the amp will put out 1500W, 750W to each speaker. Given that the amp is a bit too powerful, this would be a decent match if you don't push it to the hilt. To ensure that the speakers are safe and are not overpowered, we recommend a 1000W car amp at 2 ohms.

Hi I'm considering one of these subs but was wondering what the recommended sealed enclosure size is? The space I have available is 12inches high by 30inches wide by 15inches deep.

Asked by: Kevp
Thats alot of space, minus each measurement by 1.5 to simulate having .75 mdf, and multiply all three then divide by 1728, the sealed for this sub is .75 cubic feet which is going to be small, look up how to calculate enclosures or go to kicker box designs as they have alot of usefull information to get you started.

Hi, Can you recommend an amp suitable to power two of these together with maximum performance? Thanks.

Asked by: Boseley
Depends how much money you have, they got the GTR 1000 or Infinity Kappa 1000, if your on a budget id get a rockford prime 1200, pioneer 1200, Jl audio jx 1000. There is alot of legimate companies though but id get the JBL or Infinity to keep the Kardon name as it would sound great with its own brand amp.

Do you have to put this in an enclosure or can it go in the back parcel shelf

Asked by: Jb97
Hi. For best results with subwoofers, always build a box according to specs from JBL. But you can use it in a parcel shelf, and bass will be the result. However, the actual result depends on the area and seal of the shelf, its sturdiness and the volume of the trunk, which will act as enclosure. Also, you will not be able to play as loud as you could with an enclosure, because there is no air spring or tuned port that can reduce cone excursion. You will in effect have an undamped, free-air enclosure.

Is the JBL GTO 501EZ adequate running this sub?

Asked by: Martin82
Hi Martin, The GTO 501EZ may be a little underpowered for the peak power of the subwoofer. It will easily drive the subwoofer though, but if you wanted to get a bit more power, you can also upgrade your amplifier somewhere in the future.
